Disney World 101: What Every First-Time Family Should Know

Welcome to Disney World! Before we customize your trip, here are a few things that surprise many first-time visitors.

Disney Is Bigger Than Most People Expect

Walt Disney World is not one theme park—it’s an entire vacation destination made up of four theme parks, two water parks, shopping and dining areas, resorts, and transportation systems.

You will likely walk 8–12 miles per day in the parks.

Comfortable shoes are one of the most important things you can pack!

Arrive Earlier Than You Think

The first few hours of the day are often the least crowded and coolest.

A park opening at 9:00 AM doesn’t mean you should arrive at 9:00 AM. Plan to arrive at security and park entrance approximately 30–45 minutes before opening whenever possible.

Early mornings can save hours of waiting later in the day.

You Will Not Do Everything

This is completely normal.

Even families spending a full week at Disney won’t experience every ride, show, restaurant, and attraction.

Focus on your family’s “must-dos” and consider everything else a bonus.

The goal isn’t to do everything—it’s to have a wonderful vacation.

Your Phone Is Your Most Important Park Tool

You’ll use your phone for:

  • Viewing wait times
  • Mobile food ordering
  • Checking park maps
  • Viewing dining reservations
  • Managing Lightning Lanes (if applicable)
  • Finding restrooms and attractions

Bring:

  • Portable charger(s)
  • Charging cable
  • Full charged phone each morning

Lightning Lanes Are Optional

Many guests enjoy Disney without purchasing Lightning Lanes.

If your family decides to use them, think of them as a tool to reduce waiting—not a requirement for having a great trip.

Your itinerary will explain exactly when and where they may be helpful.

Florida Weather Changes Quickly

A sunny morning can become a rainy afternoon with very little warning.

Pack:

  • Ponchos
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Sunscreen
  • Hats
  • Cooling towels or fans during warmer months

Most rain showers pass quickly.

Staying Hydrated Is Important

Florida heat and excitement can sneak up on you.

Free cups of ice water are available at most quick-service dining locations.

Drink more water than you think you need.

Mobile Ordering Saves Time

Many quick-service restaurants allow you to order food through the Disney app before arriving.

This can significantly reduce time spent waiting in food lines during busy periods.

Your itinerary will note recommended meal locations throughout your trip.

Strollers Are More Common Than You Think

Even children who no longer use a stroller at home sometimes benefit from one at Disney.

Long days, heat, and miles of walking can be exhausting.

Many families rent strollers to help conserve energy for the fun parts of the day.

Disney Transportation Is Part of the Experience

Depending on where you’re staying, you may use:

  • Buses
  • Monorails
  • Skyliner gondolas
  • Boats and ferries
  • Walking paths

Transportation can take longer than first-time visitors expect, so always allow extra time when traveling to dining reservations or park reservations.

Snacks Are Part of the Fun

Disney is known for its snacks almost as much as its rides.

Consider sharing treats so everyone can sample more options throughout the trip.

You are also welcome to bring your own snacks into the parks.

Fireworks and Nighttime Shows Are Popular

Many guests begin saving viewing spots 30–60 minutes before nighttime spectaculars.

If fireworks are important to your family, your itinerary will include recommended viewing locations and arrival times.

The Best Disney Tip

Some of the most magical moments aren’t on a schedule.

A surprise character sighting.
A favorite ride at sunset.
A spontaneous dance party.
A snack everyone falls in love with.

Use your itinerary as a guide, but don’t be afraid to slow down, change plans, and enjoy the unexpected moments along the way.

Those are often the memories that last the longest.
